She often spoke of the struggles they faced, not just with shelter and food but with the sense of invisibility that society so easily imposed upon them. It wasn’t just sympathy she felt; it was a deep urge to help, to make their lives better in whatever small ways she could. She believed that every person deserves kindness and that small gestures can mean everything.

Maria, my dear Swedish friend. A religious sister for 5 years, working in Ghana, as nurse & midwife.In the 1980s, Prof. James Smith appointed Maria into the first very Senior Nurse Research position, in the UK. A pioneering position Maria undertook with style and published extensively. Completing her PhD at The London School of Economics (LSE). Maria’s Goddaughter Annie said;" My vision of Maria is vibrance, generosity, dedication and individuality". She supported the homeless & women priests.

Colette Carter

It is with a heavy heart that we remember our dear colleague, Colette Carter who sadly died on the 25.09.2023. She was an integral part of our Shelter support services within Birmingham. During her 5 years at Shelter Colette made significant contributions to our organisation. Colette guided some of our most hard to reach vulnerable rough sleepers into recovery, with kindness, compassion and empathy. As we mourn, we also celebrate the positive impact she had and the legacy she leaves behind.

Alan Gurney

In memory of my wonderful, beloved husband Alan. Traveller, mountaineer and keen cyclist, Alan was born in Birmingham. He studied geology at Aberystwyth University and then town planning in Birmingham. He worked in Birmingham and Coventry and for some months in 1965 in Tangail in what was then East Pakistan. This gave him an opportunity to travel back overland. We married in 1980 and loved to travel throughout our life together. It was very special to be with Alan as he peacefully passed away.
